“It’s got that new movie smell.”

With a tagline like that, Cars aims for auto enthusiasts of all ages. The Disney/Pixar production opened on June 9 to rave reviews endorsing the animated tribute to cars.

Detroit Free Press columnist Mark Phelan spoke to Jay Shuster, one of the sketch artists for Cars, about creating the different vehicles, and his family’s love of the automobile over the years. His dad, Stuart, worked for GM’s design department for 43 years, for every one of its design VPs, and is now retired.

Stuart was amused by one of the movie’s characters, Ramone, a 1959 Chevy Impala. Jay created that character. “It’s interesting because I took a photo of a car like that years ago where the fins were sticking out of a garage door,” Stuart told me. “Here were these fins with these cat-eye-like darkness. I had that photo around the house for years and I had to wonder if Jay was influenced by that. It was kind of comical.”

Carrie Roca of AutoWeek reviewed the film today and said: “Pixar’s latest feature film puts cars in the driver’s seat to tell a story about racing, hard work, winning, losing and love.”

A movie I’m definitely going to go check out. I think it’s great that GM’s vehicles are being represented well. The impala being purple is a nice touch.
