iPods Find a Home Inside HHRs

I am so excited about GM’s latest cool accessory. We’ve just developed the Personal Audio Link — my new PAL — an affordable device that allows iPod users to integrate their music players with the factory installed audio system in GM vehicles. Just imagine… your tunes delivered through the clear, quality sound of GM’s audio system.

It’ll be available in Chevrolet HHRs beginning in October with 55 more GM vehicles to come, most by the end of 2007. You can pick it up at dealerships this fall for less than $160, plus installation.

The device will display artist, title and genre information from the iPod on the vehicle’s radio display. Users will be able to sort, shuffle and seek songs as well as sort and select podcasts and audio books. You’ll be able to control the iPod using the radio controls, and if your GM vehicle has steering wheel volume controls, those will work on the iPod, too.

People love their iPods and we think it’s pretty cool to give people another way to enjoy them in their GM vehicles.

160 bucks plus installation? It’s a little late in the game, no? I imagine most kids will just use a Monster fm tuner to play their ipods through their car radios.

Does it only work for iPod? Are you also including a 1/8″ stereo input jack on the radio so anyone can just hook up any player through the headphone output on the device?

Also, I’m not sure if you’re the one who should get this request, but when/if the new Camaro and/or Trans Am are built, I think the navigation system should have configurable voices. The voice I would like would be “Kit”. Yep, you’ve got it, the voice of the TA from Knight Rider! That would be so awesome!

Keep up the good work GM…

Finally! I almost bought a 2006 Scion instead of my 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS because Scion has an iPod adapter as an option. I drive 1 hour to work each way and love to listen to my Podcast and my music. AM and FM radio is awful with too many commercials. I bought XM radio but it doesn’t replace the iPod. The iPod FM transmitter is OK, but nothing beats a copper path to the radio. Thanks GM, please make it retrofittable for us who just bought new cars. I love my car, and this is the only thing missing for an all around great car if it works as advertised. This is one more way GM and others can catch and pass the foreign cars.

Will it retrofit into a 2006 HHR?

Converging I-Pod into GM vehicles is a smart move in my opinion. In my travels around the country I-Pods are as common as white t-shirt’s are as an apparel item. ( I am sitting on a plane next to a heart surgeon and low and behold I-Pod in ear, he is happily listening to his favorite tunes). Last week in NYC Penn station I was surrounded by a sea of I-Pod ear phones swaying and dangling from every age, shape and type of ear as I rushed through the station to my first meeting. Each I-Pod user in his or her own world yet surrounded by the masses, it was an odd scene and I mentally remarked, “What are they all listening to?” GM has provided a solution to these happy I-Pod addicts to maintain their personal tune connectivity while driving their vehicles. Great idea!

Why just a iPod. There is a new MP3 player on the market that will give you more flexibility (USB flash drive, MP3 player, FM radio, microphone) and you won’t be limited to proprietary Apple iTunes. GM is locking the consumer into a corner.

Will the Personal Audio Link adapter work with the 2007 Saab 9-3? Would the car require the XM radio option? I noticed the 2007 Saab models use radios similar to other GM cars.

I can’t find anyone at my local Chevy or GMC dealers that knows about PAL. Is there a Part number for this that I can give them to help search for it?

Great idea, but bad execution if no one in GM dealers knows how to sell it!

It was originally part number 17803007 then it changed to 19171028. I have heard each vehicle may have its own unique part number then again I heard it will be one number and only work on 2007 vehicles with radio option code US8 or US9…..To bad Gm dealers don’t know about them. In most cases the public knows before Gm dealers. Sad to say!? I found it on GmPartsDirect.com but they have told me it is not available as of yet and GM has not given any clue to them when it will be. Good Luck!
