Things to Do in D.C.: The Saturn Greenhouse
The Saturn Greenhouse
By Nellie Lide
GM Consultant
As a GM consultant, you are privy to a lot of cool things. This weekend our firm is traveling to Detroit for our annual meeting and getting a sweet tour of the design center. But I wish it were another weekend, because Saturn has some events planned around the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., (I live in Rockville, Md., a suburb) that I would definitely go to. And it’s my favorite price: free.
Saturn (my favorite GM brand, but don't tell anyone) has built three “living” greenhouses: at Union Station, The Ronald Reagan Building and the Marine Corps Marathon Expo. At each location, Saturn highlights “green” or environmentally friendly habits we could all get into. They also have live music performances, a relaxation station, projects for kids, and great guest speakers like Sam Grawe, executive editor of Dwell magazine, who will present “Sustainability and Architectural Design.”
Of course there is a Saturn product there, too – the new 2007 Saturn Hybrid Vue Green Line. It’s the car I covet.
Saturn’s web site calls these events “consumer immersion experience.” I think it’s a fun way to spend an afternoon.
See the full schedule of events here. And make sure to check out more of the greenhouse over at Flickr.

I take running very seroiusly, been doing a 6-8 mile regiment a week which I want to up to 8-10. I have not done a marathon yet but if I do I want to have lots of practice and years of running experience under my belt. Doing a crash course and getting ready for a marathon in 3 months, that's just not me.
If one does want to do a marathon I would definately advise you to find a local running club. I am fortunate to run with a group of experienced runners one of which has done more than 35 marathons, he is in his 50's. Running with a dedicated and enthusiastic group of over 50 members that usually numbers 12-17 people on a given Saturday really motivates me in the cold 7:30 am air. Along with a good warrior diet it's important to me to exercise and stay healthy.
And of course, there are so many invites and special running activities we do as a group, parties, scenic runs, night runs and favorite trails they do put the fun in the run. I remember running one beautiful sunny morning and I looked to the left and there was a vast field of corn and I thought about GM and ethanol and you know where I am going with this another lesson for GM.
Look, today we lament the loss of the Taurus, it goes out of production today. How did it happen, the Taurus was like Apple Pie, Mary Lou Retton, Ronald Reagan, the space shuttle. What Happened? I will tell you...we don't respect where we came from so we don't know where we are going. Everybody knows that in government for example we want change, but we don't want revolution we want evolution. In the auto industry however, there is too much revolution and too often they tear down everything and start from scratch. The Japanese automakers are a stark contrast. The Camry and Accord have been enjoying a quiet evolution since they came to our shores decades ago. These makes and models change frequently but don't diverge too much from where they were. They know where they came from, they know where they are going, in short, they are running a good marathon.
The best thing GM could do is pick up from where it left off in the early 60's and forget the last decades ever happened. I look forward to the new Malibu with what they call "retro touches" hoping with all hope that finally the future course is a little clearer because we know we must take into consideration where we came from, the starting line, that is our history and heritage. Where we are, stay the course, pace yourself, no irratic radical changes which killed the Taurus and then know where you are going. That is retain the customer base you have while expanding that group by offering just a little bit more every year. That is how you win the race.
So come on GM run a smarter race, I am rooting for you.
