‘Now Leaving Heaven’
I visited the GM heritage Center this week, along with many other Corvair Society of America members
and experienced the Center for the first time. As our group was entering the shuttle bus to take us back to the main convention, one visitor was heard to say ‘Now leaving Heaven!’, to which a few others replied in agreement. These are the faithful, GM’s long-time customers, who would rather consider walking than give up their GM cars and trucks!
It was a very impressive sight, to see GM’s formative vehicle prototypes all in one place, but considering the profound effect that this place has upon folks, I would like to make a couple of suggestions:
The Heritage Center, which is really a museum, should be run like one, open year ’round, and viewable for a modest adult admission fee, payable at the door. You will find that people will come from around the world, to see these cars, if they are available for viewing.
Children with adults should be free, as well as children in school tour groups. When Detroit’s kids can see these formative cars for themselves, rather than in books, it will make so much more of a formative impression on them and of course, seed future GM sales.
The truly historical concept cars should be arranged around the room in chronological order on their own stands with backdrops, to give more of a passing-through-time experience, right up to the present day. Right now, unless a person knows the sequence of concepts, it’s difficult to trace GM’s development, since the cars are so scattered, with no accompanying information stands.
The room should be lit a bit better, so a flash is not really required. The present setup really is like a dark warehouse and some of the cars are arranged too close together to bee seen or photographed easily. Perhaps some of the more everyday production cars should be moved to storage, to highlight the stars, the concept prototypes.
Alicia, if you could please pass this message on, it would be really appreciated, and I look forward to visiting the Heritage Center again, as soon as possible. Thanks for a great blog, I’ll check back often!
