In our last three episodes we talked about some things GM and Chevy are doing to help reduce our dependence on petroleum, but in today’s episode we focus on something every driver can do. In today’s episode I speak with Peter Lord, Executive Director of Service Operations, about some steps we can all take to improve fuel efficiency in our vehicles through our own driving habits. I actually learned quite a bit from him in our brief conversation, and hope you will too.

I’ve decided it’s time to try something new and slow down my driving to see how much I can improve my miles per gallon. I hit a record low of 22 mpg in my 2001 Buick Regal (3800 V6 with 163K miles) in which I usually get close to 25 mpg. At first I kept it below 75mph (I drive from near Flint to Warren) and my mileage went up to over 27 mpg in a mix of highway and city driving. Then I REALLY challenged myself to keep it to no more than 70mph. My mpg jumped to 29.4 mpg! I’ve gained an extra day’s driving (100 miles) into one tank! My next challenge is to ease my stop and go within the city to get OVER 30 miles per gallon. I’m up for the challenge and so is my ol’ Buick. Much less stress on me and my car; once I got used to the scenery going past me at a slow rate, and the other cars going past at a fast rate! This is coming from a lane changing get out of my way (in recovery) driver!!! TRY IT! Your wallet will like the results!

Mark,
Thanks for the tips. That’s amazing that you got that much of an increase by only dropping your speed by five mph. Very cool.
