Cool New Technology From Opel

Our friends at GM Europe sent this video along to us to share with our readers. It involves new technology that Opel is introducing on upcoming cars that employs a camera to read speed-limit and no-passing signs, while also alerting drivers when they unintentionally veer out of their lane. (Note: There is no sound on the video, but the graphics help to explain the system.) - Will Stewart, blog editor

Chris Webb Looks Back on Imagine Fashion 2008

GM Lead Designer, Exterior and Interior

As always, the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT)/ GM collaboration was a great success and continues to gather momentum each season. Since we are both lifestyle- and trend-driven areas of design, Imagine Fashion is a natural fit for us both. Whether one is wrapping material and color around the human form or the sheet metal of a car, the similarities are obvious.

Fashion students’ understanding of proportion, shape , fit, and stitch detail is well known and when their attention is turned to cars and their interiors, great things always result.

GM has a long history of collaborating with established designers and working with the next generation of “creative thinkers” is always thrilling. I never fail to be excited by the solutions the students come up with, and each year I personally learn something new.

The selection process was intense this year and the students’ understanding and perception of our brands was enlightening. GM’s Design Leadership Team carefully studied the design proposals submitted. They were judged on the appropriateness for the brand and their overall design creativity. We debated the merits of each outfit and gave the students our written feedback.

This is an incredibly rewarding and fun project for me and it reminds me of my days as a fashion student back in England. I am already getting excited about next year!
