Opel/Vauxhall Insignia Arrives in Style

insigina-drop.jpg

The new Opel/Vauxhall Insignia made a quite a debut today in London.

The car, which goes on sale immediately in Germany, emerged from a giant orb suspended above Potter’s Field in London and appeared to fall to Earth only to be caught at the last minute for a gentle touchdown.

“We are very proud of the Insignia and decided that an extraordinary car needed an extraordinary entrance. That’s why we choose to drop in at one of London’s most frequented and iconic locations: Tower Bridge just next to the London Assembly,” said Alain Visser, Chief Marketing Officer for GM Europe, who drove the Insignia onto the stage following the dramatic reveal.

The Insignia makes its “official” debut Tuesday during the International Press Day of the British International Auto Show. - Will Stewart, blog editor

“Had a fun time at the Iola Car show. I met up with my good friend Trey for the morning. I ended up with close to a 1000 shots. This will definitely keep me busy over the summer and I still plan on visiting a couple more shows.”

Dealership Green from Ground Up: Take the Tour

lafontaine green dealership

General Motors sells the only vehicles in the world built in a facility with Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Soon, customers may be able to buy those vehicles in one of the nation’s first LEED-certified automotive dealerships: the LaFontaine Automotive Group’s new $15-million Buick-Pontiac-GMC-Cadillac dealership in Highland, Mich.

The 63,000-square-foot facility incorporates key principles of sustainable design that enable it to qualify for LEED certification under the Council’s Green Building Rating System. When the LaFontaine operation achieves the designation, it will be the first dealership in Michigan and among the first in the nation to do so.

See what makes the facility different in this video tour, as well as these photos over on Flickr.

Photo of the Day: Chevy Bumblebee Camaro Concept

This is an oil pastel drawing based on this photo of the Chevy Camaro Concept car that was used as Bumblebee in the Michael Bay live-action Transformers movie, which I photographed in the parking lot of the Athens Coney Island Diner in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak during the 2007 Woodward Dream Cruise, which I attended as a guest of General Motors FYI Blog.

I’ve been working on this drawing on-and-off since February or March, but, as is usual for me, I kept on getting frustrated with little details in the background, and I was also either working on some of the other pieces of art that I am doing simultaneously or was just plain procrastinating.

I printed out a copy of the photo, traced some guidelines on it, and then scaled them up to 22″ by 28″ posterboard size to keep the major elements in the drawing roughly proportionate to the original photograph, but, otherwise, I drew it all by eye. I try to keep a balance between impressionism and realism, but not photorealism. Photorealism requires a lot more work than I am willing to put into any given image, and, in any event, I took the original photo, so I already have a photorealistic image of this car called a “photograph”. I like producing drawings that sort of look like photos if you see them from across the room, but, when you get closer, you can clearly tell that it’s not; that’s my “ideal”. Of course, I drew this in thick oil pastels, so you’d have to stand a lot further back to be fooled compared to my better coloured pencil drawings.
