Popular Mechanics Recognizes Cadillac, Chevrolet and HUMMER for Automotive Excellence

Popular Mechanics’ publisher Bill Congdon; Detroit editor, Larry Webster and Rob Reynolds visited GM last week to recognize Cadillac, Chevrolet and HUMMER for their award winning performance in the magazine’s fourth annual Automotive Excellence Awards.

According to Congdon, each year Popular Mechanics’ editors drive more than 100 of the newest cars, trucks and sport-utility vehicles to determine the award winners, amassing well over 100,000 miles in the process.
This year GM captured three of the competition’s 10 award categories, more than any other automaker.
The 2009 Cadillac Escalade Platinum won the Technical Innovation category as the world’s first SUV to use LED headlamps – and one of the very first applications of this technology in any car or truck.
Earning top honors in the Performance category, the Popular Mechanics editors praised the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 for its combination of power and polish.
And the 2009 HUMMER H3T Alpha earned the editors’ admiration for Off-Road Ability after experiencing the combination of a functional truck bed and its front and rear locking differentials on the slick rock of Moab.
These awards are a testament to GM’s continued passion for automotive innovation and excellence, and we’re honored to be recognized by the experts at Popular Mechanics.

I can see that GM has continued to make considerable gains in the automotive field. It’s time that GM gets that myth off it name that they don’t build great cars or trucks anymore. If not for GM the automotive world may not have come as far as it has in the past 100 years.
It’s up the all true Americans to contine to support our fellow American buisness and let them grow so the rest of America can grow again.

Shame on GM for being proud of the HUMMER.
When GM goes bankrupt, HUMMER will be one of the best symbols of the company’s downfall - smug, arrogant, anti-environment, big, stupid, and unwanted by just about everyone.
Sorry but taxpayers aren’t going to pick up the tab for parking lots full of this disgusting GM product, “front and rear locking differentials” aside.
Next time show some concern for the environment. And stop suing California for having higher mileage standards!!

GM should be proud of the HUMMER Brand. It’s unique style and capability have helped millions across the globe when a disaster struck. The H3 offers the same mileage as a majority of SUV’s. I love it and feel safe driving it. I’m proud to drive it and proud to be a GM employee.
To Charles — get educated and I hope you don’t work at GM.

There is a market for the Hummer. If you owned a 20,000 acre cattle ranch in Wyoming, a Hummer would be a practical vehicle to own and use around the ranch.
The problem is that GM has marketed the Hummer to people who really have no practical use for them and don’t really need them.

I’m driving my second Hummer H3. I bought them because they are fun to drive and most importanly they are very safe vehicles. I drove it from Detroit to Florida and back averaging 19mpg. I also must note that I have never had a problem with either Hummer.
It seems that your downfall is that your smug, arrogant, big, stupid, and unwanted by just about everyone. Go take it out on someone else, Like Toyota.

You are truly misinformed and borderline ignorant!!! It is you who should be ashamed. The fact is that many people aspire to own Hummers and GM product is the best in the world!!! We have more models that get over 30 MPG than any other manufacturer!!! Look at the Honda Pilot . It is EPA rated at 15 MPG city and 22 MPG highway. The Outlook, Acadia, Enclave and Traverse are all rated at 17 MPG city and 24 MPG highway and are far better appointed inside and out and provide a great deal more useable room. The Honda V6 Ridgeline gets less miles per gallon than a full size, full frame Chevrolet V8 pick-up. Who really builds the more effecient vehicle? We also have 3 million E85 vehicles already on the road and more Hybrids that Honda and Nissan combined.
Don’t forget that Toyota blundered twice with its pick up entries before the current Tundra and then they introduced that just in time for the spike in oil prices. Now they have one brand new plant in Texas idle and are converting the other one to produce more Prius’. Both Toyota and Nissan have recently spent billions of dollars to get into the full size pick-up market. Neither of their offerings is more fuel effecient than GM’s full size pick ups.
Also try to become at least a little informed-GM and the other American Auto Manufacturers want a “loan” not for the Taxpayers to pick up the tab. Why do you want to fight GM or Ford Or Chrysler who actually build something and provide “good jobs” for many Americans? Especially when the banks and even credit card companies that charge up to 25% interest are getting bailed out with far less scrutiny and far fewer strings!!!

That would be three million flex-fuel cars taking advantage of the E85 loophole Congress and EPA provided in the CAFE rules.
Those E85 cars actually burn more energy and get worse mileage than their gasoline counterparts. E85 and flex-fuel is a scam.
