Dealership Green from Ground Up: Take the Tour

lafontaine green dealership

General Motors sells the only vehicles in the world built in a facility with Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Soon, customers may be able to buy those vehicles in one of the nation’s first LEED-certified automotive dealerships: the LaFontaine Automotive Group’s new $15-million Buick-Pontiac-GMC-Cadillac dealership in Highland, Mich.

The 63,000-square-foot facility incorporates key principles of sustainable design that enable it to qualify for LEED certification under the Council’s Green Building Rating System. When the LaFontaine operation achieves the designation, it will be the first dealership in Michigan and among the first in the nation to do so.

See what makes the facility different in this video tour, as well as these photos over on Flickr.

GM’s Fuel-Friendly Fleet Goes to the Oscars

Christie Conti
Experiential Marketing Director, PR & Branded Entertainment

It’s that wonderful time in Hollywood when a massive red carpet is rolled out and workers are scurrying like ants to put up flowing white tents and eye-popping lights and bleachers for fans for the 80 th Annual Academy Awards extravaganza. Tinseltown will earn its name on Sunday, February 24 when celebrities put on their Prada, Harry Winston, Gucci and more – oh my – to attend the film industry’s premier awards show.

But it isn’t about just what you wear from head to toe that will cause a buzz on Oscars day, but also about the ultimate fashion accessory – what you drive to the awards. For the first time ever, Oscar presenters and performers are prime to be the most stylish thanks to GMC and Chevrolet. The duo has teamed up to roll up to the red carpet with the largest fuel-friendly fleet ever assembled of its kind at a major awards show. Hollywood’s hottest talent will be stylish and environmentally friendly when they step out of a GMC Yukon Hybrid, Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell or FlexFuel E85 ethanol-compatible GMC Yukon.

GMC and Chevrolet will bring hybrid and fuel cell technology to the forefront at the red carpet as well as other Oscar Week events like the prestigious “A Night Before” party. What’s more, is that this isn’t a shot in the dark. GM is making a major effort to bring “fuel-friendly” products to the entertainment industry in 2008 with presence at awards shows, film festivals and special events, as well as heightened product placement effort in movies and television. Just a few weeks ago I saw that effort while watching an episode of TV’s “Friday Night Lights” and it was so cool to see a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid on the show.

Katie Crabb picks the best Super Bowl Ads

By Katie Crabb
Guest Blogger

Editor’s note: You might remember Katie Crabb as a guest blogger here on FYI from last year after she won the Chevy Super Bowl Ad Challenge. She’s back today with a review of this year’s Super Bowl commercials. — Will Stewart, Blog Editor

Katie Crabb here, winner of the 2007 Chevy Super Bowl College Ad Challenge. A year after my own adventures in the ruthless fight for Super Bowl advertising guru-ship and following a great summer internship with Campbell-Ewald, I find myself on the other side of the television, witnessing a whole new set of commercials aspiring for remembrance among some of the best marketing on television. My findings? Super Bowl XLII proved that the most predicted to succeed can fall short, and the unexpected should only be anticipated. And the come-from-behind win of the New York Giants further proved this notion.

The following are my choices for the five MVPs of Super Bowl 2008:

#1 - Using some beloved animated characters to bring a battle for a bottle of soda pop to life, Coca-Cola’s “Balloon Fight” spot in the fourth quarter was endearing and memorable. Great placement. Great ad. Altogether great.

Photo of the Day: GMC RTS Articulated Bus Prototype

This is an original photograph of the first 60′ RTS Articulated Series 04 bus (the second Artic prototype built). As you can see, the photo is in the Pontiac, Mich. factory, and there’s quite a bit of airbrushed paint around the bus itself. This photo (it’s large poster-sized) was used to produce sales material for the bus. None were ever sold.

“So You’re a Civilian!”

A Facebook member gets to experience GM’s views on fueling the future

By Mike Zagorsky
Guest Blogger

For the past few years I’ve been following energy topics, oil in particular. I’ve tried to figure out oil - understand where it’s going, where it’s going to come from, and how it will shape the future of our economy. Since then, as I’ve gained knowledge, the only thing that I’ve managed to become is more uncertain about the future.

One thing I will admit to is being a self-abashed Facebook addict, (and getting a Blackberry does not help the situation). I ended up taking part in the group Americans For Alternative Energy,” where I discussed my thoughts on the future of energy. And as it turns out, GM was listening. I was then extended an invitation by GM to attend their “Fuel Solutions Drive” in San Diego, where I would have the opportunity to see the different technology GM is working on and talk to engineers actually involved in reducing our dependence on the liquefied remains of phytoplankton.
